"ברבריס" הוא השם הערבי של הפירות, ומשמעותו "צדפה".

רבים סבורים שמקור שם זה הוא במראה העלים, המבריקים כמו החלק הפנימי של קונכיה.

ברברית מצויה הינו שיח רב שנתי; מוצאו באירופה.

משרד הבריאות בישראל מגביל את השימוש בקליפת הגזע ובשורש ברברית מצויה, ומתיר אותם לשיווק בבתי מרקחת בלבד.
