שמו העממי של הצמח מתייחס לשימוש בצבר ענפי עצבונית לניקוי וחיטוי משטחי חיתוך של קצבים; מנהג זה נבע לא רק מקשיחותם של הענפים דמויי העלים (פילוקלאדים), אלא מתוך אמונה שהשמן הנדיף של הצמח הינו בעל פעילות מחטאת.

עצבונית הינה עשב רב-שנתי (המיקריפטופיט) ירוק-עד. 

מוצאו באגן הים התיכון ובמערב אירופה. כיום, עצבונית גדלה בר בישראל. 

עצבונית מותרת לשיווק בישראל.

טמפרטורה: קריר.

לחות: יבש.

טעם: מתקתק, פיקנטי.

 

רכיבים פעילים עיקריים

סאפונינים טריטרפנואידים (0.5-1.5% סך הכל, ביניהם אגליקונים וגליקוזידים של ruscogenin ו-neoruscogenin), טריטרפנים, סטרולים (β-sitosterol), פלבונואידים.

 

התוויות

שימוש פנימי – אי ספיקה ורידית, דליות, טחורים, עצירות, בצקות.

שימוש חיצוני – טחורים.

 

מינונים

תמצית נוזלית בריכוז 1:3, 45% אלכוהול – 5-10 מ״ל ביום. 

תמצית יבשה בריכוז 4:1, המתוקננת להכיל 10% סאפונינים (ruscogenin)* – מינון של 400-800 מ״ג ביום.

מרתח – 1.5-3 גרם ביום.

בפורמולה – 25-30%.

*במחקרים קליניים₍₁₎ נעשה בדרך כלל שימוש במינון יומי של 600 מ״ג תמצית עצבונית יחד עם 600 מ״ג היספרידין (hesperidin methylchalcone) ו-400 מ״ג חומצה אסקורבית (ויטמין C). הפורמולות המכילות את הרכיבים הללו (ביחסים ומינונים שונים) מוכרות תחת השמות המסחריים Cyclo 3 Fort, Phlebodril או Fabroven.

ממחקרים קליניים עולה כי הסבירות לתופעות לוואי בעקבות שימוש בעצבונית הינה  למידע השלם למנויים

במחקר קליני שכלל נטילת עצבונית יחד עם  למידע השלם למנויים

במחקר קליני נוסף שערך שימוש באותה פורמולה בקרב נשים הריוניות, למידע השלם למנויים

כמו כן, קיימים מספר דיווחים מוקדמים אודות  למידע השלם למנויים

 

מינון יתר

לא ידוע על מינון יתר של עצבונית.

 

אזהרות וצעדי מנע

עקב תכולת סאפונינים, מוטב להימנע₍₁₎ משימוש בעצבונית בקרב אנשים הסובלים מ  למידע השלם למנויים

צריכת צמחים בעלי תכולה גבוהה של סאפונינים עלולה  למידע השלם למנויים

לא ידוע על כל נזק או רעילות הנגרמים משימוש בעצבונית במינונים המקובלים.
